Deposits in commercial banks and thrift institutions are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and no one has ever lost a penny of insured deposits. Even better, the agency has temporarily raised its coverage amount from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor per insured institution through December 31, 2013.

FDIC insurance covers funds in deposit accounts, including checking and savings accounts, money market deposit accounts and certificates of deposits (CDs).

In addition, North Bank is participating in the FDIC's Transaction Account Guarantee Program. Under that program, through December 31, 2010, all noninterest-bearing transaction accounts are fully guaranteed by the FDIC for the entire amount in the account. Coverage under the Transaction Account Guarantee Program is in addition to and separate from the coverage available under the FDIC's general deposit insurance rules.

The program will also cover NOW accounts as long as the interest paid is equal to or below 25 basis points by December 31 (and remains below 25 basis points during the coverage period).
